Madu River Boats covers one place: the brackish estuary behind Balapitiya on Sri Lanka’s south-west coast, and the boat trips that run on it.
That narrow scope is deliberate. General Sri Lanka guides devote three paragraphs to Madu Ganga, most of them copied from tour operator descriptions. Nobody was writing down what actually happens at those jetties — that the price is negotiated per boat rather than per person, that two operators share almost the same name, that the “64 islands” in the marketing and the 15 in the Ramsar listing are counting different things.
Who writes it
Nuwan Perera is a licensed guide based in Ambalangoda, twelve kilometres south of the Madu Ganga bridge. He has worked the Balapitiya–Kosgoda stretch since 2016 and re-walks the jetties every few weeks to re-check what is quoted, which crews still run the full circuit and which boats have working life jackets.
The site is edited and published from the same coast, in English first and translated into Sinhala afterwards by a human translator rather than a machine.
How we check things
Three categories, handled differently:
Facts about the wetland. Taken from the Ramsar Sites Information Service listing for Maduganga, site number 1372, and from Sri Lankan government sources. Where the tourism claim and the documented figure disagree, we give both and say which is which.
Prices on booking platforms. Checked by hand and dated on the page. They move with demand and the exchange rate, so we describe them as the lowest advertised rate at the time of checking rather than as the price.
Prices at the jetty. We do not publish a table, because no such table exists. Any figure you see quoted online for a walk-up Madu Ganga boat is one traveller’s outcome on one day with one crew. What we publish instead is the mechanism — per boat, negotiated, route-dependent — and a benchmark you can use.
How we make money
Through affiliate commission. When you follow a booking link on this site and book a tour, GetYourGuide pays us a percentage. The price you pay is identical to the price you would pay going direct.
What that funds: the hosting, the translation, and the time spent walking jetties. What it does not buy: placement. No operator on this river pays to appear here, and no page ranking on the operator pages is for sale.
What we will not do
- Invent prices. If we do not have a verified figure, we say the figure does not exist rather than estimating one.
- Invent reviews. We do not publish ratings or review counts for jetty operators, because we cannot verify them.
- Pretend to be official. We are not the official website of Madu Ganga, of any boat operator, or of any tourism authority. There is a notice on every page saying so.
- Recommend a “best operator”. The evidence does not support it. What determines whether your trip is good happens in the five minutes before you pay, not in a ranking.
- Hide the downsides. Boat wake damages the channels. Some cinnamon islands are shops. Some turtle hatcheries keep hatchlings for the visitors rather than the turtles. All of that is on this site.
Corrections
Prices change, jetties move, businesses close. If something here is wrong, tell us and we will fix it and note the change. Operators who believe their page is inaccurate can write to the same address and we will correct anything factually wrong — although we will not remove accurate criticism.
