Galle is far enough from Balapitiya that the calculation changes. From Bentota, Madu Ganga is a tuk-tuk ride. From Galle, it is a drive with a toll on it, which means you are committing a driver’s morning at minimum — and once you have done that, the marginal cost of adding the Kosgoda turtle hatchery or the stilt fishermen is close to nothing.
Two roads north
The E01 Southern Expressway — join at Pinnaduwa (Galle) and leave at Kurundugahahetekma or Welipenna depending on which side of Balapitiya you want. Thirty-five minutes, dull, efficient. Take this if you are chasing a dawn boat.
The old Galle Road (A2) — through Hikkaduwa, Ambalangoda and the coastal villages. Fifty-five minutes and considerably more interesting: fishing boats, the mask workshops at Ambalangoda, and the stilt fishermen if the light and the season are right. Take this on the way back.
The best version of the day uses both: expressway out at 05:45, coast road home with stops.
How to build the day
-
05:45 — leave Galle
Expressway north. If your driver is collecting from Unawatuna, add fifteen minutes.
-
06:40 — on the water at Balapitiya
The full two-hour circuit: open lagoon, mangrove tunnel, Kothduwa temple, a cinnamon island. This is the reason for the whole day.
-
09:00 — Kosgoda turtle hatchery
Ten minutes south of the jetties. Entry is cash and separate. Read our hatchery page first — standards vary sharply along this strip.
-
10:15 — Ambalangoda
Mask carving workshops and a small museum. Twenty minutes, genuinely interesting, and directly on the coast road.
-
11:30 — Hikkaduwa or the stilt fishermen
Depending on the season and the tide. Then back into Galle for a late lunch inside the Fort.

AvailabilityMadu Ganga or Koggala Lake?
This is the genuine decision for anyone based in Galle, and the tourist boards will not make it for you.
| Koggala Lake | Madu Ganga | |
|---|---|---|
| From Galle | 15 km, 20 min | 40 km, 35 min |
| Typical trip | 1.5–2 hours | 2–2.5 hours |
| Mangrove tunnel | Limited | The full tunnel |
| Island temple | Yes, Kathaluwa area | Kothduwa |
| Cinnamon island | Yes | Yes |
| Ramsar protected | No | Yes, since 2003 |
| Boat traffic | Moderate | Moderate |
| Cost | Generally lower | Slightly higher |
Choose Koggala if you have half a morning, no car, or you are heading east towards Mirissa anyway.
Choose Madu Ganga if you have the morning, you want the tunnel, and you intend to add Kosgoda. It is the better estuary; it is also the further one.
By train, honestly
The coastal line from Galle to Balapitiya is a lovely ride and costs almost nothing. It is also slow, unpunctual by design rather than accident, and the morning services do not put you at the jetty in time for the good light.
Use it if the train itself is the point — sit on the sea side, open the window, and treat the boat as a bonus. Do not use it if you want to be on the water at 06:45.
What Galle-based visitors get wrong
- Leaving at 09:00. You arrive at 10:00, when the birds have gone and the boats are stacked up. Leave before six or accept a sightseeing trip rather than a wildlife one.
- Booking a “Madu River day tour” with six retail stops. Spice gardens, gem showrooms, batik factories. Ask what is on the itinerary and decline the shops.
- Doing the hatchery first. It is on the way north, which tempts drivers to stop. Do the river first — it is the time-sensitive half of the day.
- Not deciding about Koggala. If you were never going to get up at 05:45, Koggala Lake was the right trip and it was twenty minutes away.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get from Galle to Madu River?
About 35 minutes on the E01 Southern Expressway, or 55 minutes on the old coast road through Hikkaduwa and Ambalangoda. The expressway is worth the toll if you are aiming for an early boat.
Is Madu River worth it from Galle?
Yes, if you build a day around it rather than driving 80 km round trip for two hours on the water. Almost every Galle-based product bundles the river with a turtle hatchery, the stilt fishermen or Galle Fort itself.
Can I take the train from Galle to Balapitiya?
Yes, on the coastal line. It is cheap and scenic but slow, and the timings rarely line up with a 06:30 boat. Most Galle-based visitors take a car or an organised tour instead.
What about Koggala Lake instead?
Koggala Lake is 15 km east of Galle and offers a comparable boat safari with cinnamon islands and temples, much closer. Madu Ganga is larger, has the mangrove tunnel and the Ramsar status. If time is tight, Koggala is the pragmatic choice.
What time should I leave Galle?
05:45 to be on the water by 06:45. If that is unrealistic, aim for 07:30 and accept a 08:30 boat — still good. Anything that puts you on the river after 10:00 loses most of the wildlife.
