If you type almost any Madu River query into a map, this name comes back. It appeared in five of the six searches we ran in August 2026, frequently in first position, and it is the name most guesthouse owners between Bentota and Kosgoda will give you if you ask where to go.

That visibility is genuinely useful. It also creates the single most common arrival problem on this river.

The name problem

There is more than one listing using this name or a very close variant of it, on different stretches of the bank. Both are real businesses. Neither is trying to deceive anyone — “Madu Ganga Boat Safari” is a description of what they do, and several operators arrived at the same words independently.

The practical consequence is that a tuk-tuk driver given the name rather than the pin has a genuine chance of taking you to the wrong jetty, where a crew will happily sell you a boat trip while you wonder why nothing matches the reviews you read.

Where it is and why that matters

The main listing sits on the northern bank, close enough to the Galle Road bridge that you can see the boats from the road. Practically, that means:

• Easy to find, from Bentota, Induruwa or Ahungalla, with no navigation required.
• Busiest part of the river. This is where coach parties are dropped from mid-morning.
• Highest competition. Several crews work within a hundred metres, which is good for negotiation at 06:45 and irrelevant at 10:30.

What the search footprint suggests

Five of six searches, usually near the top, across brand queries and geographic ones. That pattern indicates an established listing with a long history and a steady stream of reviews rather than a burst of recent activity.

It does not indicate boat quality, crew behaviour or route length, none of which Google measures.

What to check before you pay

1. Which pin am I standing on?

   Confirm you are at the listing you intended. If the surroundings do not match the photos you saw, you may be at the other one — which may still be fine, but you should know.

2. How long, and which stops?

   Say the words: mangrove tunnel, Kothduwa temple, cinnamon island, two hours. Get agreement before money is discussed.

3. Can this boat enter the tunnel?

   The larger covered boats cannot. If the tunnel is the reason you came, take the smaller vessel even if the price is identical.

4. Show me the life jackets

   Count them, check the buckles, check for a child size if you need one. A crew that produces them without fuss maintains the rest of the boat too.

5. What time are we back?

   Say it out loud in front of the driver. This single sentence prevents most of the disputes that happen on this river.
