Madu River from Induruwa

Induruwa is a strip of beach and a handful of hotels between Bentota and Kosgoda, with none of the first one’s noise and none of the second one’s turtle traffic. It also happens to sit eight kilometres from the Madu Ganga jetties, which is close enough that the logistics of this trip disappear entirely.

Why it is a good base for the river

Three reasons, in order:

1. Fifteen minutes to the jetties. You can be on the water at 06:45 without an early alarm or a driver booked the night before.
2. Ten minutes to Kosgoda. The turtle hatcheries are on the way back, and — better — reachable separately in the late afternoon when releases actually happen.
3. Nobody is competing with you for boats at 06:45. The coach traffic comes from Bentota and Kalutara later in the morning.

The morning

• 06:15 leave Induruwa
• 06:30 at the Balapitiya jetty
• 06:45 on the water
• 08:45 back on the jetty
• 09:00 Kosgoda turtle hatchery, or straight home
• 09:45 back at the hotel

The whole thing is over before the day heats up, and it costs a tuk-tuk fare plus a boat.

The nesting beach

Induruwa sits on the same stretch of sand as Kosgoda, and it is a genuine sea-turtle nesting beach rather than a marketing line. Green turtles and olive ridleys come ashore at night through most of the year, dig above the high-water line, lay, and go back.

What that means in practice for a visitor:

• It happens after dark, usually late, and it cannot be scheduled. Anyone offering a guaranteed nesting sighting at 19:00 is selling something else.
• Lights are the problem. Torches, phone screens and beachfront floodlights disorient both nesting females and emerging hatchlings. If you are out on the sand at night, keep the light off and stay well back.
• Do not touch, do not flash. A camera flash at a nesting turtle can make her abandon the attempt after an hour of digging.
• Hatchlings run at night and need the natural horizon to find the sea. Anything bright behind them sends them the wrong way.

A slow-day plan from Induruwa

The trip most people miss because they are busy going somewhere else:

1. 06:15 — Madu Ganga

   Fifteen minutes south, full two-hour circuit, back before nine.

2. 09:30 — Ambalangoda

   Twenty-five minutes further south. Mask carving workshops and the fish market, both genuinely worth the stop.

3. 12:00 — the beach

   Back at Induruwa for the hottest part of the day, which is exactly what the beach is for.

4. 16:30 — Kosgoda

   Ten minutes north. The hatcheries are doing actual work at this hour rather than showing tanks to a mid-morning coach.

That is one day, no car, no booking beyond the boat, and it covers the wetland, the craft, the coast and the turtles without a single hour spent in a vehicle you did not need.

Two rivers, ten minutes apart

Induruwa sits almost exactly between the Bentota Ganga and the Madu Ganga. Worth knowing what the difference is before you book the wrong one.

If you have one morning, go south. If you have two, do both — they are genuinely different water.

What Induruwa does not have

Being honest about the trade-off: there are few independent restaurants, limited nightlife, and no real town centre. Most guests eat in their hotels. The nearest range of places to eat is in Bentota and Aluthgama, ten to fifteen minutes north.

If that sounds like a drawback, stay in Bentota and add ten minutes to every journey. If it sounds like the reason to come, Induruwa is the quietest base within twenty minutes of a Ramsar wetland on this entire coast.

Getting to Induruwa

• From Bandaranaike airport — about 110 km, two hours on the E03 and E01.
• From Colombo — about 75 km, an hour and ten on the expressway.
• By train — the coastal line stops at Induruwa. Slow, cheap, and the station is a short walk or a very short tuk-tuk from the beach hotels.
• From Galle — 50 km, 40 minutes on the expressway.
