Madu River from Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa sits 22 km south of Balapitiya on the old coast road, which makes Madu Ganga a comfortable pre-breakfast trip if you are willing to get up, and an average mid-morning outing if you are not.

The road north

The A2 runs through Ambalangoda and Akurala and reaches the Madu Ganga bridge in about half an hour at dawn, longer once the school and market traffic starts around 07:30. There is no expressway advantage on this leg — the E01 runs inland and you would spend more time getting to and from the interchanges than you would save.

The morning that works

1. 06:00 — leave Hikkaduwa

   Empty road, cool air, twenty minutes faster than the same drive at eight.

2. 06:40 — on the water

   Full two-hour circuit at Balapitiya. Birds still feeding, lagoon still flat, no other boats in the tunnel.

3. 09:00 — Kosgoda hatchery

   Ten minutes north of the jetties. Entry in cash, separate from anything you have already paid.

4. 10:00 — Ambalangoda on the way back

   The mask carving workshops are the real thing and take twenty minutes. Devil masks, kolam masks, and a small museum that explains what they are for.

5. 11:00 — back in Hikkaduwa

   In time for the second half of a beach day, or a nap, depending on how the 06:00 start went.

Hikkaduwa’s own turtles

Worth stating clearly because it confuses visitors: the green turtles that come into the shallows at Hikkaduwa beach are wild animals feeding on seagrass and on whatever people throw in. They are not a hatchery and they are not part of the Madu Ganga trip.

They are also, on their own terms, one of the more remarkable easy wildlife encounters on this coast — large adult turtles in waist-deep water, metres from the sand. Two requests: do not stand on them and do not feed them. Fed turtles crowd swimmers and get injured by boats.

What to stop for on the way north

The A2 between Hikkaduwa and Balapitiya is one of the more rewarding twenty kilometres on this coast, and almost nobody uses it as anything but a transit corridor. Coming back, take these in order:

• Kosgoda turtle hatcheries — first thing you reach heading south from the jetties. Entry is cash at the gate and never included in a boat fare.
• Ambalangoda mask workshops — kolam and devil-dance masks carved from kaduru wood, with a small museum attached. Twenty minutes, and the carving is done in front of you rather than staged.
• Ambalangoda fish market — busiest early. Tuna, seer, skipjack straight off the boats. Worth ten minutes even if you are not buying.
• Akurala beach — a wide, empty stretch with a reef break, largely ignored by visitors staying in Hikkaduwa.

None of these needs a booking. All of them fit inside the same morning as a dawn boat, which is the argument for driving rather than taking the train.

Two mornings, if you have them

If Hikkaduwa is your base for several days, the strongest version of this is two separate half-days rather than one long one.

Morning one — the river. Leave at 06:00, full circuit at Balapitiya, back by 09:30. Nothing else attached, so the crew is not working to a schedule and you can ask them to idle in the channels.

Morning two — turtles and masks. Hikkaduwa’s own beach turtles at first light, then north to Ambalangoda for the workshops, then Kosgoda hatchery in the late afternoon when the nests are checked.

That splits the two time-sensitive activities — dawn on the estuary, dusk at the hatchery — instead of forcing both into a single compromised day.

An honest alternative for anyone in Hikkaduwa who does not want a 06:00 start: Koggala Lake is 30 km the other way, past Galle, and offers a similar boat safari with cinnamon islands and temple stops. It is not the Ramsar wetland and it has no mangrove tunnel of any consequence, but it is a real trip and it is closer to a normal breakfast time.

Madu Ganga is the better estuary. It is only better if you go early, and going early from Hikkaduwa means leaving at six.
